Maurice Claude Payne was born on 27th September 1911 (Mildenhall Q4-1911 4A:1722), son of John William and Sarah PAYNE (née LARGE ).

In the 1939 register he was with his parents in West Street, Mildenhall, a carpenter/coffin maker, father [4-8-1889] a general labourer, mother [28-7-1884]. There are no closed records.


The 8th Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders were converted to an Artillery Regiment, becoming the 1200th Light Anti-Aircraft/Anti Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery and served with 2nd Infantry Division in Burma. They were involved in the battles at Kohima.

6 of the unit died that day, but the other 5 are buried in Kohima.
